Programs or links that start running automatically

How can I control which programs or links I want to start running
automatically when I boot?
 
Hi,

Click start/run, type msconfig and click ok. Go to the startup tab, uncheck
the ones you don't want.

On each program you don't want to start automatically, check its
Options to see if it has the choice not to start. Many can easily
and best be stopped that way. If that doesn't work, run MSCONFIG
from the Start | Run line, and on the Startup tab, uncheck the
programs you don't want to start automatically.

However, if I were you, I wouldn't do this just for the purpose
of running the minimum number of programs. Despite what many
people tell you, you should be concerned, not with how many of
these programs you run, but which. Some of them can hurt
performance severely, but others have no effect on performance.

Don't just stop programs from running willy-nilly. What you
should do is determine what each program is, what its value is to
you, and what the cost in performance is of its running all the
time. You can get more information about these with at
http://castlecops.com/StartupList.html. If you can't find it
there, try google searches and ask about specifics here.

Once you have that information, you can make an intelligent
informed decision about what you want to keep and what you want
to get rid of.

Brad and Ken Thanks for the Info but which are the essential processes
required as a minimum to run XP.

My laptop has 512MB RAM but continually crashes due to low memory when I
reboot and check the Processes running at start up there are 36 Processes
using about 150MB.
 
Hi,

Nothing on the startup tab is essential, anything there can be disabled.
However, your problem may be entirely unrelated to the startup load, as
there are several causes of the low memory warnings.

Do you have Intel Application Accelerator installed? If so, you need to
uninstall it and install the latest version. The older ones are incompatible
with WinXP and can cause this error message.

If not, then try this: Go to System properties/advanced/performance
settings/advanced tab/virtual memory change and disable the swap file.
Reboot. Delete all instances of pagefile.sys from all drives should any
exist, then reverse the original steps and reenable the swap file. Reboot
once more to finish. See if this helps.
