programs opening on their own

I am operating winxp. I can be working on any file and all of a sudden the
start menu opens and various programs start opening. When this happens I
have no control over the mouse. Sometimes i can hit escape and that allows
me use of the mouse and i can close the programs and resume what i was
doing. But most of the time it causes the program i was working on to close.
I had restored it to all avail restore points but still have the problem.
