Over the last week I've had a problem with all programs launching very
slowly. I'm running XP Pro.
I've tried chkdsk, defrag, virus scan, even system restore. Nothing helps.
Does anyone have an idea or two to offer?

TIA

check your running processes i.e hold down control and alt and hit
delete..

is there anything dodgy looking in there?

Anything your not sure of,do a google search to identify it...

is msupdate.exe running??

Look for unneeded/unwanted backroung programs running at startup:
Start>Run msconfig and experiment with unselecting Startup items until
system runs better.

Often your system will get bogged down with adware/spyware/crapware. Run
Ad-Aware! from:
http://lavasoftusa.com and scan system for junk. Do this before msconfig.

These measures have kept my system running well.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I tried them all with no success. BUT, I
just downloaded the last available update for my version of virus protection
(Fix-it 4.0) and the PC immediately went back up to speed.
Now I'll have to buy a newer version of virus protection.
Again, thanks for the assist.

Why don't you just delete the virus program?
