Programs constantly running

Mangomary

Problem Description: When I do a shut down I get the message that the program
SMax4PNP and the program Cardreader backupWindow are running .

I have to choose "end now" because the message reads "program not
responding" when the system is trying to close for the shut down.

I hope you can help.

The majority of files started at boot probably do not have to be started.
The second program's description is too vague for me to determine if it is
needed.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/SMax4PNP.exe-4986.html gives info
so you can determine if you even need it starting at boot.

Should you determine that neither file is required to start at boot, run
msconfig.exe and on the resulting screen, select the startup tab. You can
disable most programs from starting at this location by removing the mark in
front of it. After rebooting, you will get a screen and mark it to not be
shown again.

If I do this I go to the selective startup and uncheck what I don't
want. If I then go back to the normal tab these items are checked
again. But if I want to leave them unchecked I have to remain on
selective startup. I have a utility to remove items from the startup
list if I don't want them but why can't I do that from Windows'
system?

You can. Perhaps Help would assist you or Google?
What you do depends on what it is you've decided you don't want.
Mcconfig, which is what it sounds like you're using, is only a tool for
finding out which ones are a problem; then you have to go to that source
and stop it from running there.

If you can't stop a program from starting up by using its own interface
(the preferred method) and don't want to edit the registry manually (or
stay in "selective startup" mode via msconfig), one of the most useful
tools available is Autoruns. This shows virtually all of the places
where applications may start and you can then either permanently delete
the application from starting or temporarily prevent it from starting.
