I am awaiting delivery of a 256Mb flash memory "dongle". Other than the
portable version of Firefox, what useful programmes can be run from such
a device?

Perhaps the "pricelessware" site could list (or at least indicate) those
utilities which will work in this way?

I'd love to have AllChars and Irfan view on mine!

Dialog newsreader can run from a memory stick.

If the test is "no install" and/or "no registry entries" sort the acf
program information pages on the "I" column. It has that info for some
apps. ("One file wonders" that can be *made* to work that way aren't noted.)

Thank you, but which pages> I can't see an "I" column, for example, on:

http://www.pricelessware.org/thelist/gra.htm

as noted above - the *acf* program information pages. . .
you will find them at the *other* Pricelessware site. . . ;)
If you want to sort all 3500+ programs go to:

http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/acf/P_ProgramIndex.php

or go to the Category pages. . .

http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/acf/P_BUSINESS-HOME.php
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/acf/P_DESKTOP.php

etc. etc.

FWIW - the Pricelessware pages (for PL04 and PL05) at
*pricelesswarehome.org* also note this information.

This is a list a have made. I have tried most of them and they work
fine. IrfanView is perfectly standalone. I don't know about AllChars.

There is a lot of stuff that will do. Even the massive OpenOffice works
from a USB keydrive without touching the registry.
I also list some resources.

Sweet! Thanks much for the info!

How much slower does it run than when run from the HD?

I don't know because I don't have a memory stick, sorry.
I only know that it's possible: it writes in the registry only the keys to
set it as a predefinite newsreader, otherwise it reads its settings only
from a .ini file and other data files in its own folder.

IrfanView should work, as it doesn't need installation. I often need
the sysinternal tools for system checkups.
