Indeed quite of topic, but I'm quite happy with the PHP Bible (Php 4.2)

ISBN 0764549553
Costed me about EURO 55,-

You could also take a look at a php book of easy computing. I find their
books also quite handy.

Of course, there is alsways the manuals of php itself for free:

I've been quite happy with "PHP and MySQL Web Development" by Luke Welling
& Laura Thomson.

Another very good one, but perhaps a bit too advanced for a total beginner
is the "PHP Anthology". Volume I discusses basic techniques very
thoroughly, volume II covers real-world advanced applications.

Thanks! I posted this as OT book recommendations earlier, and got zero
response. The help is greatly appreciated Wald and Kitten.

Well, I don't mind to answer the occational off-opic question, as long as it
stays occational, and it is not a troll (or alike).

Might I also suggest you take a look at some of the PHP new groups?

Oh yeah, concerning the PHP Anthology: you can actually download 4 sample
chapters from the publisher's website. That's why I know that they're quite
good books :-)
