for myself ... Total
First - no one should be using their real email address in usenet
newsgroups. You are opening up your email address to unscrupulous
people who harvest email addresses.
I learned the hard way a while back. I became the target of a well
known worm (don't remember the name). I was receiving hundreds of
emails a day with attached files, and the attached files all had the
worm or virus in them. I never opened any of them, however, I was
still on a list somewhere on an infected (several??) system and kept
getting a full mailbox every day for over a month. Legitimate email
couldn't get to me after my box was full, not to mention the hassle of
wading through 150 emails to find one good one saved on my ISP email
server's suspect list. I ended up getting a new email address.
Second - As far as Norton/Symantec goes - I had a problem with Norton
2003 not being able to update my anti-virus files. And though
Symantec has a very good website that answers many questions and
addresses many problems, they have no free way to contact them - a
voice call costs you $$ and is NOT just a few bucks.
I ran without virus protection for a while. I wasn't going to pay $15
to $30 for tech help.
That said, I took a chance on Norton 2004 SystemWorks in that would be
able to fix my problem of not being able to update, I hated Norton
now, and ONLY took the chance because it had a double rebate - one for
buying it from where I bought it, and one because I owned 2003
already. It only cost me like $10 after rebates.
It runs beautifully now. Auto updates of anti-virus stuff, and the
other features of the SystemWorks are nice too - like cleansweep, and
a password manager that remembers all of your password from anywhere,
and also remembers your name/address/phone #/etc, and will enter them
all for you when you go to the page - it automatically knows it is a
page where info needs to be entered, and asks you if you want it to
enter the info for you. Click - it's entered.
I wish Norton/Symantec had voice tech help, or even supported a
newsgroup. Even voice support for like $4 or $5 would be ok, but
they don't have it. It is like at least $30 per incident, or they
have a 1-900 # that charges by the minute to your phone #. I could
never figure out how to email them either.
If you are not afraid of having no free or minimal cost voice support,
or no email support, then I recommend Norton SystemWorks 2004.
