Hello people.

Sometimes my hard drive goes "crazy", suddenly it will do a lot of accessing for
no obvious reason.
I want to discover what program is causing this access.

Q: Is there any program that allows me to see what program is read/write to hard
drive?

Some programs cannot be seen by some program monitors.

(1) When did you last do a virus check ?

(2) When did you last do a trojan check ?

(3) When did you last do a spyware check ?

(4) What O/S are you using ?

Regards, John.

~7 days ago.
(2) When did you last do a trojan check ?

I don't remember this one.
(3) When did you last do a spyware check ?

1 month ago. Since I rarely download programs and use Opera as my main browser,
with various programs locked on the firewall , I don't have problems with this,
methinks.

Windows 98 SE.

Have you got MS Office installed ? How often is the disk activity ?
Once an hour ? Once a day ? Does it occur when you aren't doing
anything ?

Lastly, does your firewall allow a single click to stop internet
access ? If so then next time this activity starts then totally
stop internet access and see which program(s) complain. Then
let us know the result.

To improve swap file ( Virtual Memory ) usage on systems ( W9x/ME )
with more than 64Meg RAM
http://www.aumha.org/a/memmgmt.htm
DON'T set any min/max parameters . Let Windows handle it!
Put this entry in the system.ini file under [386enh] .
ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1
Check on your swap file occasionally; if you haven't been playing
games or running intensive apps, the swap file often will be 0 (zero).

MS-Office 97. Disk activity basically when doing simple stuff like
using MS Excel.

It alows, but the disk access happens more often when I am offline.
It's just when I am online that it's more irritating.

Sounds to me like you haven't turned off the file optimisation feature
in Office. Turn that off and your problem should be solved IMO. If you
cannot find the setting then post in the '98 or office newsgroup.
