Can anyone recommend a freeware program for Windows XP which has the
capability to password protect individual files or folders?

Have a look here..
http://netwonder.us/modules/mydownloads/viewcat.php?cid=51
My personal fav. is File2File

The website for File2File at
http://www.cryptomathic.com/file2file/index.html seems to imply that
File2File is Shareware...

I also don't think File2File will meet the posters needs since he is
looking for a program to encrypt not only files bit also folders.
File2File is great for files but It does not look like it will encrypt
folders..

I searched a long time for this program you are looking for. The
program is LockFolder 5.0. I am using on WindowsMe but the program
supports all operating systems. It is very simple to use and I have
never had a problem with. Actually I like using it just to lock up
folders, gets on other peoples nerves!!!!!!!! The website to download
is www.softpile.com/Utilities/Security/Review_19144_index.html

Good Luck!

Thanks to all who replied. LockFolder was just what I was looking for
and it works well.
