After checking that IE was my default program in the "set program defaults" (
I actually selected IE and said OK to make sure) when I click on the IE icon
on my desktop, it opens a box that asks me what program I want to open this
with..I navigate with browse to Program Files--IE..iexplore.exe and double
click selecting this. I say OK and back out each time saying ok but it does
not seem to take. The shortcut in the tray works fine just the one on the
desktop acts as previously described. I have XP SP2. Any suggestions?

Hi Old Bob :-)

The desktop icon may have become corrupt. Try crating a new desktop icon
and see if it works.

First see if you can just rename the current desktop icon. Just right click
on the icon, click rename and then add OLD at the end of the file name. then
follow the information here:

How do I recreate IE Icon on Desktop

or...

Just go to Program Files>Internet Explorer>scroll down to find the
EXPLORE.EXE and right click on it, select Create Shortcut, and then copy it
to your desktop.

If all works well, you can delete the old icon.

Hope this helps

When I do this, however, I just get a "shortcut" E and not the original where
I can delete cookies and files etc..

Hi Old Bob :-)

Right click on any blank area of the desktop and select Properties.
Click the Desktop tab>Customize Desktop.
Place a check mark in box next to Internet Explorer.

See if that restores an original icon.

If not, you can still delete the cookies and temporary files by doing one of
the following

Go to IE>Tools>Internet Options>General tab.
Click on Delete cookies button
Click on Delete files tab and check the box to delete off-line files

or...

Go to Star>Settings>Control Panel>Internet Options>General tab.
Click on Delete cookies button
Click on Delete files tab and check the box to delete off-line files
When I do this, however, I just get a "shortcut" E and not the original
where
I can delete cookies and files etc.

Hope this helps

I have deleted temp files and cookies as you suggested--the check is already
in the desktop tab..and the default settings indicate IE. anything else I
could try? Do you have any idea why it will not accept my navigation to the
iexplore.exe as the program to start this?

Not unless there is a corruption somewhere that is not showing up, I can't
think of anything.

Try this and see if it will repair your dekstop icons
