Program to move everything from WinME to WinXP?

I just purchased a new PC with WinXP. I've networked it to my old
WinME system and am in the process of moving everything from one
system to the other. Of course with pure data files this is a cinch.
But with installed programs, in many cases I've literally had to
reinstall each program from scratch, then reconfigure it. Is there a
program that will enable me to easily move all installed programs
(including registry settings ) from one PC to the other?

I sure do not think so. The architecture of the two are like night and
day.

No. Not unless you want to copy the OS itself as well (which clearly you
don't because you are going from ME to XP). You will have to reinstall all
of your software.

But you know what, this may be a pain, but it is a good thing. You wouldn't
want your ME registry copied to XP because they are not the same system and
by reinstalling, it ensures that you'll get a nice "clean" installation of
the software.

I would suggest that after each successful install and reboot of software to
your XP machine that you create a system restore point with a description of
what you just installed. This can be very valuable if you ever want to roll
back the system becuase of a bad install of something.

You are correct that you can not do this, but the reason is not
the difference in the architecture of the two operating systems.
It's because all programs (except an occasional trivial one) have
references in many places on the drive--in the registry and
elsewhere. There's no easy way to move all of this from one
computer to another, even if they were running the same operating
system.

Thanks Ken for the clarification. That is essentially what I meant.
Computer architecture is the art of assembling logical elements into a
computing device; the specification of the relation between parts of a
computer system and the structure and organization of a computer's
hardware or system software.
To me this says XP and ME are like night and day or black and white or
whatever analogy you so choose to use.

It may be a good thing, but it takes a L-O-N-G time to reinstall and
reconfigure everything! OTOH, I'm new to XP, so the learning
experience is probably needed.

I'm not familiar with this, is it a commercial program, shareware,
built into XP, what?
