Waaaaaah!

Sometimes for no reason my Roadrunner connection just dies (yet the Windows
XP broken connection alert doesn't show up).

Is there a program that I could put in my system tray that will allow me to
monitor the status of my connection? (incoming, outgoing, if it's still
freakin' connected)

Start/Settings/Control Panel/Network Connections

Right-click on your Connection Icon and select "Properties"

Be sure both "Show icon in..." and "Notify me when..." are both checked.

Reboot.

Reboot.

The "Notify me when..." is checked, but sometimes it only works if I
physically disconnect the cable. My connection could be down for 10 minutes
and that icon just won't popup.

The first icon K3 wrote about is the connection icon, it should be there
as long as the connection is "live".

From your description I get the impression that whatever you use to
connect to the Internet (modem, router) may have serious problems in
respect to stability; first suspect: the power supply for either one of
these.

Another option would be to use a program like "Huge Brother"
(http://www.hugebrother.com) and set it up to check for the availability
of a server that *should* be reachable... when the connection drops the
program will change its tray icon's color from green to red, and will (if
checked in the options) play "SOS" over the system's soundcard... Very
informative <grin>

You may want to have a look at Bitmeter: http://codebox.no-ip.net
