I was having problems with PowerPoint XP and inserting movies. The program
would quit responding/never insert the movie (.avi). I just installed
PowerPoint 2003 and the same thing is happening. I have done this in the
past with no problems. Any ideas about what is going on? Thanks

Please try this. Go to Start > Run. Type mplay32.exe and click OK. Open your
AVI file in the player and click the play icon. Does it play?

nope. I did try changing all the win.ini and system.ini settings as
recommended at the website you have. It didn't help. The problem was
"solved" when I finally remembered how I solved this issue in the past: I
had purchased a program that converts videos into other formats...in this
case from .wmp to .avi. That is the only way I can insert a movie into
PowerPoint without the program freezing/stops responding. I have a feeling
Windows XP created this problem in the first place since I never had problems
inserting movies in the past. You'd think that any Microsoft product
(Windows XP and Office XP or 2003) would play nicely together without causing
conflicts or having to edit settings. I don't know of any other multimedia
programs I may have installed that would create this issue, but that could be
the case. Whatever caused the problem, however, I seem to have side-stepped
it, but only by making it necessary to spend more money for the converter
program. Thanks for your response.

It wasn't an .avi file (I erred in my first post). It was a .wmp file that I
downloaded from an internet site that posts short and goofy videos. It plays
OK in the Windows Media Player, but I've learned from this discussion group
that this isn't the same as the Media Player. It wouldn't play with that
program.
