Program Randomly Closes

I have had Windows Movie Maker 2 since last summer when I purchased my new pc with XP Pro OS. And since around october of last year while I was working on a project the program would randomly close on it's own, without any warning that there was a problem. I have downloaded the program again from Microsoft.com and reinstalled and still have the same problem. I have also made sure that I have the latest downloads from microsoft updates. Even today when I tried to use the program it worked for about 5 minutes and then closed by it self. Can anyone help?

Hi there,

On the assumption that the program fails when you are adding a
transition or effect to your work, I would say that you have a codec issue.
Codecs are special routines or "Black Boxes" that contain methods for
video/audio data manipulation. Almost all video programs use them...if your
computer has any old copy of a DVD playing program...the sort you are given
when you purchase a new computer, you will very likely suffer when you try
to run MovieMaker. Your description is exactly the same as the problem I
had.....I solved mine by buying the latest version of WinDVD 5 Platinum, but
so many non-literate computer users were having this problem that I decided
to create a temporary fix.

I have written a program that will allow you to rename known problem
codecs so that you can then use MM without any problems (from these codecs
at least) Whether or not my program solves your problem you must again run
the program to restore the codecs original name(s) The program is called
"Rename Codecs" and is available from my website. You are not required to
have any knowledge of where these codecs are stored or how many copies of
each codec are on your computer.....typically my program will find all of
the "known" problem codecs in less than 5 seconds.....all you do is select
and confirm you want them renamed....the reverse occurs when they are to be
restored....except you do not have to know what they were renamed to...the
program takes care of it.

Hello,

if John's suggestion below does not take care of your situation, you may
want to try reinstalling DirectX from Microsoft.com

John,
I got your response and went to your website and
downloaded your program. Upon running your program i
clicked on diable codecs and then checked all of the
listed codecs that were found. Then I clicked on the
rename button and then a pop-up window opened up with a
big sign flashing STOP! and the following text below
it, "You are strongly recommended NOT to use this
program. Should you decide to proceed, you do so entirely
at your own rick. This program is guranteeded to do one
thing only, and that is, it will take up space on your
hard drive." Then i gives me and OK button and a Cancel
Button.

What the heck is this?

Yes that's OK...I included that warning for those who need a second chance
to back out.....and in a way its also a reminder that no non-trivial program
is totally safe...although Rename Codecs is probably as close to Trivial as
you will get. In its perhaps dramatic way its the Conditions and Terms of
use that just about every commercial package has...but there's is often
printed so small that you need a powerful magnifier to read.

The other program on my site does exactly the same thing "Delete Dross"
(Which I have today upgraded to version 1.1 Phew....big things Huh? :)

Hi,
I have a similar problem - reinstalled MM2, verified
DirectX 9.0b, ran John's codec renamer.

The crash I have is 100% repeatable. It happens even with
a new project. Here's how it crashes for me:
* start MM2
* edit/add title
* type some text, hit return or wait a second
* blammo, window disappears without a dialogue or
anything.

Any ideas?

Hi there,

Peter said:
it was easy just go to this site and rename the file and it works great
http://www.eicsoftware.com/pictures/PapaJohn/Website-MM2/MM2-Issues-Acceleration-and-Codecs.html

If you know how to search out all occurrences of the one file that is
causing you trouble and you are completely at ease renaming them then
yes...its easy enough....provided you do know where ALL of the files are
etc....most of the users of this newsgroup do not fall into that category.

I tried your suggestion with no luck
My problem is also 100% repeatable

Click on any effect (i.e. fade in
Program closes

I tried your program and all I got was a "file not found" error when I selected rename

Any ideas

Hi Andrew,

I just sent you an email...did not know you had posted in here..... I
will be off to bed in about 30mins....after you check out my email perhaps
you can let me know if it helped you out. If you reply before I hit the sack
I will see what I \can do for you.

Basically if it really is an error I need to know the exact steps you
took with the program that caused this error. On my system I have pulled all
sorts of tricks on the program to try and make it cause XP to report any
error and I get nothing. The program itself can generate errors but before
that would happen you would have to commit the program to an operation and
before the program finished you would have to either delete or rename the
files manually....and you would have to be very fast doing it. Anyway, I
look forward to hearing from you.

I have been having the same problem as MarkC: I try to type in a title or add an effect and the program just quits. It was working just last night and have not done anything to my computer. As with most people on this thread, I am in dire need of assistance

Any working solution is much appreciated

Hi there,

The solution offered was to download a program I wrote from my website
called Rename Codecs. The program searches out (anywhere on your system)
all of the known problem codecs and gives you the chance to rename them.
Whether or not it helps you use MovieMaker you use the program again to
restore them to their original names....the program takes care of all the
boring stuff, like where they are, what the name should be etc.

I found a website http://www.eicsoftware.com/pictures/PapaJohn/Website-MM2/MM2-Issues-Acceleration-and-Codecs.html that really helped. It gave a few possible solutions that i found that FIXED my problem. My solution came from renaming a single codec "divxaf.ax". the advise given that I used is the following

The conflict with the divxaf.ax codec is today's single biggest reason for MM2 crashing. Start with that one - find it, rename it (I suggest naming it divxaf.ax_ so you can easily rename it back if you need to later), and then test MM2. You don't need to reboot MM2 or anything to test it

TRY IT!!! it worked for me.

Hi Eric,

You were lucky....the statement that it is the biggest cause of movie
maker crashing is of course not valid....that statement should read Of the
people using DivX to download and access certain movies find that when they
try to use Movie Maker, the badly formed DivX always fails them.

There are many times more people out there who are using Movie Maker for
the first time and have never heard of DivX or how it came about or what it
is used for.

The additional statement that you do not need to reboot is fine, if you
want to take the risk that not re-booting will lead you to a decision that
the particular codec renamed was not the cause of the problem.

The message you copied wrote makes the assumption that DivX is to be
found on everyone's machine...the words used were "Start with that one, find
it...." Sorry...VERY bad advice...what the poor novice going to do who has
never heard of DivX or how it came into being going to do when he can't find
it?????

I am pleased that your solution, as a user of DivX, was so easily found,
but then it would be anyway. As far as believing that it is a cure all for
every one else is a GROSS assumption on your part and not constructive for
all of those people reading these messages that have not got a clue about
DivX or how it came to be so popular.

In the meantime, anyone having problems such as unexpected closure of
Movie Maker please try downloading the program called "Rename Codecs" from
my website...and as I type, here comes another note of thanks from Linda. It
could not have been more timely....She says...

.."took the 2 downloads you suggested and also deleted my Sonic DVD as that
had
been installed after I had started working with MM and IT has worked! the
small projects are much quicker it is allowing me to edit titles and preview
the images so I am really pleased.I hadnt seen any suggestions to upgrade
media player and DirectX (I didnt know I had DirectX installed on my
XPsystem) I think that tip should be added to the discussion pages and does
PAPAJohn know it works?
Mr Kelly If you ever come to Jersey Channel Islands (near France) I owe
you a beer!

Need I say more...and thanks Linda. Papajohn can't even set his email
program up to work properly....and as he is always saying..."I am here to
learn"....but ...well Basically he is not allowed any more of my quotes...a
lot of them on his web site where no name is given. and he is DEFINATELY not
allowed to have my program on there either...he blatantly copies what other
people say, does not give them credit and basks in the glory himself...its a
very sad affair....He also claims that he posts in 52 newsgroups and some
web forums on the subject of video editing.....NO HE DOES NOT, I checked and
archived every message he has ever posted...some of it is quite funny. By
The Way PapaJohn, it would have helped if you had at least changed some of
the wording...do you realise that you can cut great chunks out of your site
and do a search for the message and come up with a match every time and
therby reveal who the first person in here said it!!!
