Is there any program that logs the programs executed on a computer? I don't
want one of those big spy-on-your-spouse programs, but just something that
can keep track of how many times a program is run.
TIA
Yes, just turn on process accounting.
On UNIX, start with "man accton".
Can't remember where it is in OpenVMS, try "help accounting", or go look
along the whatever-colour-it's-up-to wall.
For OS/400, it should be on by default.
For OS/390, MVS, and so forth, just ask your friendly administrator. Or
it's somewhere in the JCL manuals.
If you are running windows you are out of luck. Although I have a vague
memory the the AS variants have some sort of process accounting, but
it's a bit of overkill. Perhaps the customised variants as supplied by
Compaq/HP and the like on their high-end super-servers may have it, but
again, it's overkill.
