Is there a way that I can combine several program items from Start/Programs
( eg Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook) so that they are
combined and appear under one program item, eg Microsoft Office?

I use Windows Explorer.
For Office programs I navigated to C:\Documents and Settings \All
Users\Programs.
I clicked Programs and then File | new | Folder/
I named the new folder Office.
Then I dragged the shortcuts for all of the Office programs from
....\Programs to ...\Programs\Office.
