Hi there,
Just wondering if anyone knows what's wrong with my computer and how to fix
it. I keep getting the error
Program is too big to fit in memory
for almost all the programs on my computer. I do not have the boot disc as I
have misplaced it somewhere.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
The above message is caused by the misreporting of thye memory required to run
the program, when loading it. It has nothing to do with shortage of physical
RAM or virtual memory, as some suggested.
The problem could be caused by a corrupted header of the faulty programs (the
header is where the parameters how to load the program are written), or the
presence of a corrupted / infected system file.
It would help if you described what you have done just before the problem
started manifesting itself, like online or off-line virus scan. It could
provide a clue. I am not saying that this is what happened to your files, but
header corruption is rather typical to an unsuccessful attempt to disinfect,
when conducted in the wrong conditions.
Since your PC runs under XP, then try this:
Download McAfee's Stinger on a friend's virus-free PC and save it to floppy
(Stinger is a self contained virus cleaner that fits on a floppy, that handles
about 40 of the most common and recent malware).
Restart your PC in safe mode WITH COMMAND PROMPT, by tapping the F8 key, then
run A:\STINGER.EXE from the command line and of the floppy. Watch if Stinger
reports any findings and note them down.
When done with Stinger, then run *from the command line* some of the programs
that reported "too big to fit" in Windows normal mode. Ask for assistance from
an experienced user if you don't know how to run a program from command line.
If the error repeats, or all programs fail to load under safe with command line
mode, then these programs are corrupted and cannot be recovered. You may also
discover that some of your XP applications have the same problem. In which case
the reinstallation of Windows and the ruined applications may be required.
