Program installation

When i surf the net, occasionally i get a pop-up that
installs a program with out even informing me it is doing
so. Is there anyway to stop this from happening? I am
currently using IE 6.0, Win XP Pro.
 
In the Internet Options control panel (Tools=>Internet Options menu in IE),
on the security tab you will find the settings for downloading activeX
controls and programs.
The programs that you are describing sounds like they are dialling programs
that circumvent these security features and are extremely hard to prevent
from installing.
As a precaution you should avoid visiting these sites in the first place.
Also you should consider installing some anti-malware programs....
