I'm not sure the subject is clear. Someone's asking for a program that will
show his list of installed programs and when he last used them so he'll know
what he can uninstall or delete. He has a way to see all his programs in a
list, of course, but he's wanting something to show when he last accessed
them. Thanks.

In windows 2K or XP, use Control Panel->Add/Remove programs. Select to
sort by date last used.

I don't think this information is available in earlier versions of
Windows.

Unfortunately it actually sorts by date of last installation, and even that
with some confusion.

This is not true. I just checked on both my xp and 2k systems, and the
date displayed and sorted on is the date last used. It doesn't even
show the date of installation.

The date last used is not always what you might think it is, because
of shared use of files, and is not always accurate. But it's as good
as you're going to get.

Okay, thanks. What about Belarc Advisor? Someone suggested that.

C&P'd
Belarc Advisor can tell you what you have. Also open Optlog.txt in the
C:\WINDOWS\APPLOG folder. That will tell you program usage from your last
install or C:\WINDOWS\APPLOG folder deletion until your last defrag.
At each reinstall I go through the windows folder and delete all sorts of
crap, but be careful. C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS has lots of rubbish. I'm using
1.26GB of 4GB at the moment.

Hi Terry,
I'm running XP Home SP1 and, for example, the Add-Remove window shows that
I've last used Opera on 19th November 2003: it is currently open on my
desktop and, in addition, I've installed it on 5th November 3003 (I know it
because I use Total Uninstall)!
I don't know why it behaves this way or why yours doesn't.
I remember anyway this issue discussed in a WindowsXP NG, and was pointed
out that the expression "last used" was inaccurate and referring more to
the date of last use of the installation process.
However this doesn't explain why in your system it works well with the date
of last use.
I'd like to know what is the experience of others.

Ciao,

This does not explain why on my system, XP, it shows virtually all those
applications which I use every day as not having been used for up to two
years. The poster who suggested that they were ranked by date of
installation seems to have got it right in my case, judging by the dates
which I saw.

It may be as good as it gets, but it's hopelessly inaccurate.

Cheers,

Roy

Yes, and yes.

Just checked this on my XP and it is as stated above. Add to this the fact
that many programs have no date attached to them and it is definitely
useless. As far as I can tell, it records the last date on which the
installation program was used.
