The result of typing into the address bar simply closes
all/any browser windows I have open and shuts down IE. I
tried disabling Norton Antivirus without success. Also
deleted corrupt ActiveX components. Anyone have input on
how to solve this this issue ?
Thanks.

Yes, there is a workaround, although I don't believe it
was the intention of the programmers: I use WXPPro and
navigate to Control Panel|Windows Update, and, in my
case, v4.windowsupdate... is activated. Yuo will notice
that it lacks the 'Microsoft Internet Explorer' trail.
From here on you can browse as you wish. It is
interesting also to note, that Windows seems to be a
little confused over the situation: In the Taskbar you
may either see an IE icon or a Folder icon. The case is
the same in Taskmanager's Applications window. But if you
look at Processes, you will find no reference to IE! The
whole lot seems to baked into Windows Explorer! This way
you can save a lot of memory, also...

In the recent past, I have seen a few questions in this
forum referring to this mysterious behaviour of IE, but
have not seen any registry related answers yet.

Good Luck, Finn
