I am using Outlook XP, and subsequent to installing an
Office Service Pack 3 update, I get the following message
window whenever I compose email or use reply, to an email.
The message indicates that a program is attempting to
access email addresses in Outlook and asks "Do I want to
allow this" It further goes on to say that if this is
unexpected, then it could be a virus and I should choose
NO. Then another line allows me to set a time value access
time for when I select YES. The problem is that this
window is an endless, reoccuring loop with the NO
selection, that is, it keeps popping back up, and I cannot
close the email or the Outlook program. I have to either
use TaskManager to close the application or resign to my
fate and select YES. I've run Norton Anti-Virus with no
detection and a great program called The Ultimate
Troubleshooter that assesses all background running
programs, with no obvious results of any program that
might attempt to access email addresses. I've also run
Detect and Repair.

Any ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

It is a problem with the SP3 update and I believe any anti-spam filters and
how they access outlook. Are you running anything like that?

Thanks Guy for the input. I currently do not have any add-
on anti-spam filters. I am running an update on the Anti-
Virus to see if I've missed detection of a Netsky variant,
which is a worm that attempts access to email addresses.
We'll see what comes up on this. It could coincidence
with the service pack update.

Thank you, Ty, for the referral. After reading the
article I thought "bingo", but when I went in to clear to
ICQ Express check box (assuming it had been installed via
the service pack) in the workaround, it wasn't installed.
It sure seems like this is the ballpark, since there are
no viruses detected. In the meantime I found I can clear
the warning box via escape key and then quickly clicking
the close button for the reply email...but what a pain.

I saw this in one of the other newsgroups - it may help
you:

Outlook 2002 SP3 adds additional properties to the list
of those that are
affected by the security features. As a result, one of
your add-ins needs
updated to the latest version - antispam add-ins are a
common cause
although others are affected by the changes as well. Many
add-ins were
updated following the release of Outlook 2003 and should
work with SP3, if
not you'll need to contact the vendor for a newer version.

http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/ol2002sp3.htm#problems
has a list of
applications known to trigger the warning.

To learn how to program around the new properties (which
is needed for the
macros to work with OL2003 too) see

Thanks again, it all seems to be coming together with the
SP3 installation, although some of the workarounds are for
developers. I'm going to do some add-in removals and see
what discontinues the message, and then check for updates
to the program.
