When deleting user profiles from a pc, is there a way to get back any data
that was associated with the profile? (Example: \\bob\my
documents\test.doc) If the bob profile is deleted, is there anyway to
retrieve the test.doc? Any utilities that would work?

Thanks in advance.

Recycle Bin remained empty. I am going to try a system restore to an earlier
date, but not sure the data will come back.

Hi,

*STOP*. System Restore will not bring back data files such as .doc files.

Running System Restore may eliminate the chance of retrieving the lost file.

What process did you use to delete the user account?

How

No user accounts were deleted, only profiles.

System Properties > Advanced > User Profiles >Settings

selected: domain\username

clicked: delete

No local account on our machine other than the administrator

Recycle Bin remained empty. I am going to try a system restore to an earlier
date, but not sure the data will come back.

No, System Restore can not possibly help you. System Restore is a tool
for restoring the operating system. It is *not* a backup tool, and
does nothing to protect your data files.

System Restore is meant to be a quick easy way to revert your system
(not your data) to the state it was in a day or a few days ago.
Effectively it's just an easy way to undo a recent change you made.

Thank You ALL for your assistance.

I located a file recovery software package on the internet that resolved my
issue. This is a great site with fast assistance.

Kudos to you all........TJS

Great!

For the future, you might want to note that is not really a site at
all, but a newsgroup. You are accessing the newsgroup through the
*awful* web-based interface, which is the slowest, clunkiest, most
error-prone method there is. Do yourself a favor and switch to a
newsreader, such as Outlook Express, which comes with Windows. See

Are you sure about that? User profiles is an OS file and generated/modified
each time the user changes one of his/her options. If it were deleted by
mistake I believe restore would bring it back along with the address of any
data file it pointed to.

OK, yes deleting a profile in that manner deletes the user documents folder.

If and account was removed via Control Panel - User Accounts, and Keep Files
was selected, the deleted account's files would be placed in a folder on the
desktop of the user that deleted the account. That's why I asked.

I am glad to see you recovered the missing file.

As I understood his message, the data files themselves were gone. If
that's correct, SR won't help.

I understand. I THINK in his case a restore would have fixed his problem.

Hi,

Just to be sure I performed this test.

1. Created a New User account in a VPC
2. Logged onto the New account
3. Created a new .doc file and placed it on the desktop and put a copy in
the My Documents folder
4. Logged off the New account
5. Created an new restore point within my account
6. Deleted the New account profile via System Properties - Advanced - User
Profiles - Settings
7. Restored the system to just prier to deleting the profile. The profile
was restored but the .doc files were gone.

Oops! Should have tried a restore BEFORE creating a new account and creating
a new restore point.
Remember you do not have to accept the new restore point. You can in effect
negate it.

TJS

You did appreciate that Restoration has nothing to do with System
Restore?

Hope this helps.
