ProfileList doesn't match Documents and Settings

I inherited a computer with Windows 2000 Professional and
I'm trying to figure out the correlation between the
ProfileList in the registry and the Documents and Settings
in Windows Explorer.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList has 4 entries. Their
ProfileImage Path data are:
%SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\Earl
%SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\Sandy
%SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\Earl.SANDYHOME
%SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\Administrator

Windows Explorer has these directories:
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users
C:\Documents and Settings\Sandy

Should there be a one-to-one correlation between the two?
Can I delete the registry entries that don't have a
corresponding directory in Explorer?

* Unless you have a compelling reason to do so it's always best to leave the
registry alone.

.

Yes, I know. But I made an image of the C drive so I can
restore it if I mess it up. I'd like to understand that
part of the registry.

Do you know any place on the Web that explains the
ProfileList entries in detail? In particular, I'd like to
understand the "Earl.SANDYHOME" entry. I haven't found
anything that detailed.

It's probably one of a few possibilities.

1.) The user logged onto a domain at one time. On a
newly-joined-to-the-domain PC if you logon to the pc first, then to the
domain you would end up with two profiles.
%username%
and
%username%.%userdomain%
Else if you logon to the domain first, then to the pc you would end up with
%username%
and
%username%.%computername%

2.) The original profile is corrupt.
3.) An in-place upgrade was performed.
