I do not have Microsoft Access installed on my pc but I
do have Microsoft Office XP Small Business installed.
Can I install the UPGRADE version of Microsoft Access
2003 on my pc without having a prior version of Access
already installed? Thanks!

Sisyphus,

I do not have direct experience directly with your scenario, but I would
expect the answer to be Yes, and I would be very, very surprised if it
were not so.

I would actually expect the opposite. SBE comes with the Runtime of Access, not
the full product and would think that NOT to be a valid upgrade path for Access.

Rick,

Upgrade versions of Office normally require *one* of the following
products installed: Office, Works, Excel, Lotus 1-2-3, Word,
WordPerfect, Access, FoxPro, etc, etc.

Is there a difference though if the upgrade product you buy is the Office suite
versus Access by itself? Seems like an upgrade for "just Access" would require
that you have Access already.

Good point, Rick. I don't know. I didn't realise it was possible to
get an upgrade version of "just Access" any more.

But for the record, I do have a "just" Access 2.0 upgrade :-) and the
qualifying products are:
Access 1.0 or 1.1
Office 4.0 (Standard or Pro) or later
Works 3.0 or earlier
FoxPro
Paradox
dBase
Clipper
Approach
DataEase
FileMaker Pro
Q & A
R:Base
SuperBase
PowerBuilder

In particular, note that Office Standard qualifies. But this is offered
just for historical interest... I guess the rules might have changed in
the last 10 years?

PMFJI.

It took some doing, but I finally found the upgrade details!

Apologies for the wordwrapping that's going to occur. Each URL should be a
single line.

As the list for Access 2.0 shows, at one time, they seem to push competitive
upgrades: trying to wean you from some other manufacturer's product.
Recently, it appears you can only upgrade from an older Microsoft product.

Can I install the UPGRADE version of Microsoft Access
2003 on my pc without having a prior version of Access

Yes you can: No this year it is not called an 'upgrade':
Yes, in general you can install an MS upgrade on just about
anything (they don't make lots of different upgrades for
different situations).

You /may/ have problem with the installation. Firstly,
because you are installing Access 2003 on Office 2002.
Don't let the installation damage your copy of Office 2002!
If you get a choice, make sure you install Access 2003
to a DIFFERENT folder, and don't let it uninstall anything
else.
Secondly, because you are installing Full Access on top
of the Access Runtime. There may be stuff that is setup
to use the Path to the Runtime. The runtime will still be
there (because you were CAREFUL not to damage your copy of
OFFICE)

Most MS Office install programs are actually pretty good
about this (not so good with the uninstall!), so you will
probably be alright, but I warn you: don't do this the night
before a big day, just in case something goes wrong.
