XP SP1.......which is Product Key-sensitive.....
It downloaded and did its hour-long thing and installed
everything, and when it was done, I rebooted and
went back to Windows Update to see what other new
updates they were notifying me about. It must have been
satisfied with my Product Key at the start of that process.
And now it thinks I have a pirated Product Key, because
it won't do anything in Windows Update, and tells me
to report it.
Do I have any alternative other than phone in to discuss
it with somebody?

No.

XP SP1.......which is Product Key-sensitive.....

Yep that looks like the message you should have received when you first
installed SP1 if you have a bad key. It is strange that it allowed you to
install at all.

would not have installed in the first place.What is the exact error message
that is being reported from Windows update site? The update site might be
experiencing problems due to the huge amount of traffic recently due to the
Blaster Worm.
