I read a thread earlier about somebody wanting some sort of product key..The thread was closed and I can understand why for all things to do with Piracey etc...But if the product is owned by that person and wasn't a Pirate copy they could download some sort of SIW Programme in order to get the product key they need..I have one installed on all my computers, and it is perfectly legal

I agree, there's nothing wrong with using SIW to find a product key for something that is already installed, but it sounds like it wasn't installed and the product key had been lost so there was no way to retrieve it.

I locked the thread once the user asked about getting one online, as that would be illegal :)

Although saying this, and i'm not quite sure what the right wording would be..SIW programmes can also be a Software thiefs best tool...

How do I find my product code XP pro on my hard drive (the mother board is dead) I now have it set as a slave to my working Windows (XP pro) and seems like I can see my files?
thanks Joel727

From past experience the product key is stored in the registry of the associated o/s. With XP the key is converted into a numerical version. I've seen a few programs that extrapulate it from a working o/s... not sure about non-working.

Anyways, M/S licensing laws state that the product/license key is to be attached to the side/underside of the computer. If it's not there..... naughty naughty :o

Every properly licenced PC will have a sticker somewhere on it ... and it's all you need.

Even my self-built systems have a 'sticker' on them (or I would forget who is who), and the "driver" CD is on the inside of the case. ;)

Ooooo..... I'm not the only one to do this then. Saves me loadsa time when looking for drivers etc. Although I must admit.... in me old age (25) I've grown lazy.... and tend to use ghost images now :D
