When attempting to install, I get the following notice:
"Setup cannot verify your product key."
I tried three times and am absolutely certain I typed in the product key as
printed on the label.
I am quite disconcerted.

Often times with MSFT the product key print can be misleading. "B's" and
"8's" look very much alike, for example.

You are absolutely correct, as I discovered within seconds of posting this
query and turning beet-red with mortification.
It didn't matter, anyway, as I decided not to install it once I realized
that much of my favorite and/or necessary stuff wouldn't run on it.
I feel like I got suckered out of the S&H, but that's another issue.
Thank you for your response, nevertheless.

Don't forget that those people that ordered Vista on DVD's will
automatically recieve RC1 when it ships at no additional charge.

Perhaps RC1 will support more of your favorite apps...

Hey no problem. I get the magnifying glass out to read the things, and I
don't even wear reading glasses!

Vista build 5384.4, (Beta 2) is exactly what it is, a test vehicle for
people to examine and find errors. It is by design, loaded with additional
program code to aid in "debugging," making it run a little slower and also
is not "feature-complete" by any definition. The applications that are your
favourites may or may not work; but keep in mind that most software and
hardware vendors have had a long time to examine Vista and develop changes
to their applications so that they will work with Vista. Much of the
integration concerns are in the way that Vista handles installations of new
software, and sadly, some vendors are showing an impressive resistance to
change. Because of this, Vista, at this point, was never intended to be
used as anything more than a testbed for the "beta-testers" and a novelty
for anybody else.

As hdrdtd has previously mentioned, "Release Candidate 1" will be made
available to you when it is released. You already have, in fact, paid for
the S&H for it, anyway. I suggest that, if you feel this particular time is
not appropriate for you to test a beta operating system, that you relook at
this next version of Vista. Most of the "bugs" will hopefully be ironed-out
and it should be a complete package. It is also more likely to have a wider
range of software and hardware that has become compatible (but not
guaranteed). Perhaps your favourite applications will be included. Perhaps
you can take this opportunity to revisit some options to these applications.

In any event, the choice is obviously yours. I am glad I could help you
with this step.

Mark
