A woman just moved here from Russia and she brought with
her a copy of windows xp professional, in Russian and
would like it installed on a computer. Problem is she
doesn't have the product key. So, I was wondering if she
bought a new copy of windows xp professional and used the
product key with the Russian cd would it work.

Hi Tammy:

The product key from an English version of XP will not work with the
Russian version. Just have her install the English version and then
add the Russian language pack from the XP CD. She will at least be
able to use most of her Russian software, however, the operating
system dialogs and help files will all be in English.

If she has proof of purchase she might be able to purchase another Product
Key for her existing Russian version. Call Microsoft and see if they can
help http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

She could try calling MS here (800) 426-9400 and see if they will supply
her with a new product Key for her Russian version. It is worth a try.
