I was given a computer which has xp on it. When I went to do updates it told me I have the wrong Product ID and would not install SP1. What can I do to get a product ID? I am unable to contact the person I received the computer from.

You were given a PC - BUT - were you also given a legally transferred
licensed copy of Windows XP ?
If you did not receive the CD ROM and the paper work (license, certificate
of authenticity) etc then you may not actually have a license to use Windows
XP

The fact they you seem to have the error that indicates a pirate copy of
Windows XP is also not a good sign, so you may still have to go out and buy
a full retail copy of Windows XP to make your PC licensed and then
repairable to allow you to get the updates etc.

Greetings --

If you are trying to install Service Pack 1a and getting the
following:

The Product Key Used to Install Windows Is Invalid

You need to purchase and use a _legitimate_ full retail copy of
WinXP Pro to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation,
using the new CD and Product Key.

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows XP

Remember, you should also report whomever sold/gave you the
pirated software to the pertinent law enforcement agencies; you've
been defrauded.
