I have a clone PC from a local store that I paid to have XP Pro installed.
When I try to install the service pack 1 I get an invalid product code
error.

Did the dealer put in an illegal copy of XP Pro on my computer? What can I
do to get Service Pack 1 installed? If I buy the boxed version of XP Pro
and install it, will I lose everything already on my hard drive?

If you are getting the following error message when attempting to update to SP1:

Error Message: The Product Key Used to Install Windows Is Invalid
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;326904&Product=winxp

You'll have to purchase a new "Full Version" of Windows XP Professional
and perform a "Repair Install" using the new Windows XP Pro CD and Product Key
that comes with it. (You cannot simply change the Product Key)

You have a pirated copy of Windows XP installed on your computer. If you
paid for this copy I would certainly call in law enforcement, as the
computer shop ripped you off by selling illegal software.

It would certainly appear so. Do you get a CD and certificate of
authority with it?

You already paid for it, didn't you? I wouldn't want to pay
again. Tell the dealer that *he* needs to put a legal version on
your drive and not charge you again, or else you will report him
to the authorities. And this time make sure you get the CD and
COA.

Before you give the computer back to the dealer, make you have a
backup of anything you can't afford to lose. He *should* do it in
such a way that you don't lose everything there, but I wouldn't
trust him.

If you are trying to install Service Pack 1a and getting the
following:

The Product Key Used to Install Windows Is Invalid
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q326904

You need to purchase and use a _legitimate_ full retail copy of
WinXP Pro to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation,
using the new CD and Product Key.

Remember, you should also report whomever sold/gave you the
pirated software to the pertinent law enforcement agencies; you've
been defrauded.
