I purchased XP Professional a while back now and activated
it after installing it. I have checked out the website for
information and have learnt a few new things, however, one
question I have which I couldn't find an answer to is, I
am about to ugrade my pc, m/board, CPU, memory, HHD the
works, now I gather I will need to re-register/activate,
how is this done?

Registration is optional and as far as activation is concerned it could be
automatic and painless or at worst require a phone call.

No, registration is always optional, and never needs to be done
again.

/activate,

That depends on how much you upgrade, but if it's truly "the
works," you probably will have to reactivate.

how is this done?

You'll be prompted to do it if you need to. If it's been over 120
days since you originally activated (you said "a while back," so
it probably is), it will activate over the internet just as it
did the first time. If fewer than 120 days, you'll be given an
800 number to call and explain what you've done. Even if you have
to do it by that voice phone call, it's quick and easy, normally
under five minutes.

Greetings --

Normally, and assuming a retail license (many OEM licenses are not
transferable to a new motherboard), unless your motherboard is
virtually identical (same chipset, same IDE controllers, same BIOS
version, etc.) to the one on which the other WinXP installation was
originally performed, you'll need to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place
upgrade) installation, at the very least:

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows XP

As always when undertaking such a significant change, back up any
important data before starting.

This will also require re-activation. If it's been more than 120
days since you last activated that specific Product Key, you'll most
likely be able to activate via the internet without problem. If it's
been less, you might have to make a 5 minute phone call.
