I recently upgraded my processor from an Athlon XP 1800+
to a 2400+ model. My Asus A7V333 with Bios 1017 fully
supports both processor models. I have Windows XP
Professional with SP1 installed along with additional
updates. The problem is that my system runs slower than a
486 and I can't figure out why. My first question is, do
i need to do a reinstall or repair of XP just because I
upgraded the processor? Should that have anything to do
with this? I tried updating the chipset drivers and
disabling any unnecessary programs and services. It
runs "ok" for a little bit but then drags really bad
until I reboot the system. I scanned for any spyware that
might be on my system but it is clean. It was running
fast before the upgrade. I tried getting help from AMD's
Processor Forum but received no replies. Thanks for any
enlightment on this issue.

Dan, I assume that you checked in the Bios to make sure that your new 2400
is running at the correct speed and fsb.
Is there a jumper on the Motherboard?

It's for the best, that when you install new hardware like cpu, you do a
reinstall of win.Especially when renewing a mobo, otherwise it won't work at
all. You can also remove all your hardware in windows and reinstall it all,
but i think that will take you some more time.

Yes, the motherboard is set to automatic mode. The memory
and clock speed are both set to 133. The multiplier is
set to 15 as well to reflect 2000 MHz in the bios. I have
at least 50 to as much as 80 applications on my system
which includes apps, utils, games and other programs. To
have to reinstall XP, that would also mean reinstallation
of many if not all of those programs. That in itself will
take days to do with my work schedule. I've contemplated
if the processor is bad but that is highly unlikely,
especially for a retail boxed unit. The memory is PC2100
which complies with the processor having a 266 FSB.
Thanks for the reply. Any other suggestions?

Well, I have at least 50 to as much as 80 applications on
my system which includes apps, utils, games and other
programs. To have to reinstall XP, that would also mean
reinstallation of many if not all of those programs. That
in itself will take days to do with my work schedule. I
initiated a reinstall/repair of XP this morning but it
just sat there with the tip information listings changing
but the time remaining stuck at 33 min. I think at this
point if i don't get it to successfully reinstall, I will
have a hosed system. Thanks for the reply.

What you say is true, then I would remove all hardware in windows and
reinstall all hardware (you can do this in the register but better is in
device manager). For the future: if you are planning to do things like this
again, i'd suggest you'd make an image of your drive, just in case.
Hope you get everything working fine.

Did you upgrade the M/B as well as the processor?

Well, I will try to let it finish the reinstall. I am
going to take home a floppy or cd full of the latest
drivers so the setup program can install them as needed.
I had problems with that this morning, it kept asking for
the built in audio drivers even though i have a sound
blaster live!.... oh well, I will see where my system is
later tonight or tomorrow if i am able to get the
reinstall/repair to work. Thanks.

No I did not. I did have plans on buying a new
motherboard (A7N8X) and faster processor (2700+) but
those fell through. I figured it shouldn't be anymore
complicated then upgrading to the 1800+ I've had for a
while now but this has proven different. I've been a
technician since 1994 and have seen just about everything
regarding windows. However, this whole windows activation
business and reinstall after hardware change business is
just ludicrous. It just doesn't seem to be
a "compatibility" issue, as the motherboard fully
supports the processor. How different could it be,
compared to the 1800+?
