Thanks for the advise to all. Now I must ask. Is the
Celeron 564 w/ 64 MB of Ram good for windows 98? Or did
he remove the original stuff and replace it with
something different. I have a Gateway Computer and
figured they put whatever it needed to perform properly
for the O/S that was original equipment.

Windows 98 will run OK with 64 MB although it will run
better with more. Most older motherboards will not support
more than 512 MB of RAM and Windows 98 does not use RAM as
well as XP does.

If your motherboard will support 256 or more MB of RAM, it
should run XP adequately but XP has stiffer requirements for
hardware and BIOS than do previous versions of Windows.

There is a XP compatibility check that will scan the
computer and report on hardware and software problems with
an upgrade to XP.

Since you already have XP installed, I would suggest that
you buy a 128 MB SDRAM that is compatible with what you
already have, which is probably PC 100 SDRAM, although
Celeron systems are set to run at 66 MHz. Try it and see if
it works. You could have two 32 MB RAM or one 64 presently.
If you have an open slot, just add the RAM, if not remove
one and insert the 128. If your motherboard and BIOS will
support it, you could add a single 256 MB SDRAM.

But before you spent too much money, be aware that you can
buy a new Dell with XP installed and a P4 CPU at about 2.6
GHz (with a minimum RAM of 128 MB) for less than $500 (you
can add up to several GB more RAM cheaper than you can buy
it from Dell).

Win98 was loaded because it was new when the computer was new. It is now
outmoded, and often problematic. XP is the better choice for most people.

If XP installed successfully, then the computer is compatible -- XP has an
extensive compatibility check as part of the installation process.

Unless the repair person was just trying to do it cheaply, he should have
advised you to have more RAM installed at the time of the XP upgrade.
Either 256 or 512 MB is preferable, and RAM is relatively cheap...

Though a newer/faster machine will obviously be faster with XP, you don't
NEED one.

Where does the OP say anything about XP being installed, or
a "repair person"? The original post was totally
unintelligible, so why bother guessing?

John was refering to an earlier post by the same person. It would have been
better if Karen did not start a new thread concerning the same problem.
