I have started to use my computer a lot lately, more than usual and noticed
it crashes now and again for no reason.

I have tried everything to clean it up but it still occurs. I thought maybe
it could be down to the constant use being an issue with the processor. How
can you tell if the processor is overheating? Ive also read other posts
which mention the power supply, is their any sure way of telling if either
of these is to blame before I go to the expense and bother of doing either?

You can check the temp of your CPU from the BIOS screen but there also a
lot of programs that will enable you to check the temp. of your system
from Windows.I think MDM5 and Everest home edition give you these options.

The best way to rule out a PSU problem is to check the wattage of your
PSU(eg.300W,350W,400W) and post it together with your system
configuration on the newsgroup.I'm sure someone will be able to see if
your PSU matches your system needs.

I thought I would go down the CPU temp route first so downloaded MDM5 and
have noticed my temp is between 46-49C dont know if this is normal or not
and my fan is running at 4500rpm.

I dont really know the best way to find out the power supply watts as well
as the exact configuration you wanted me to list so thought id see how it
went with the temp first.

There is a reason, you just have to discover what it is. Pay close
attention to the circumstances and write down any error codes.

To determine power requirements follow these links which were provided to me
by Mac Cool on another thread.

how big?

which brand?

You will need to know your configuration fairly well to use the calculator,
Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager will give you most of
that information.

I'd also like to know what CPU temp is recommended. Prior to changing my
PSU my CPU was registering 40 degrees C with a fan speed of 3000 rpm, after
upgrading the PSU the temp is 33 degs at 3200 rpm.

Hello Topper,

Regular BSOD's could indicate that there is something wrong with your RAM
chips (I have been there myself). Try to test the memory with Memtest 86+
(Ftreeware): http://www.memtest.org/

CPU temperature of 46-49C is a bit high, but nothing to worry about. Start
worrying at 70C. You could try however to install an extra casefan to bring
the temps down. So in my opinion the CPU temp doesn't cause the crashes.

The only error codes I can get hold of are the ones when the system resets
and the 'Windows has recovered from a serious error' box appears.

Without actaully sending the codes to microsoft would anyone be able to shed
any light if I posted the codes anywhere?

Maybe... I would try looking them up in Google first.

Pay close attention to what the machine is doing when it crashes and see
if you can determine any commonalities, (e.g. crashes during cpu intensive
tasks, crashes during games, crashes on mouseclicks, crashes when the
harddisk is writing, etc)

Had a quick look through a google search but theres a few causes and not all
codes match entirely so gonna be a tricky one by the look of it.

As for what Im doing at the time its normally when I leave my comp on
downloading, when I come back to it just a black screen and it wont even
reset unless I turn power off at the the plug.

Its only running FlashFXP when it crashes.

Don't toppost. You have lost the entire thread. At a guess, you
may simply be running into the power time out for the monitor. If
so, don't reset, just bang the alt key a couple of times.

If it is a power management time-out, could be that some
piece of hardware (the driver) is buggy, preventing wake-up.

Check your power management settings and turn them off as the other guys
suggested. Also check if Flash has a setting to shut down the computer
when it's finished downloading, if it does, turn that off.

If it's only happening when you are downloading with Flash then I would
check the following two things first:
1. If Flash is attempting to shut down the computer, the computer could be
getting hung in the process.
2. Some programs use so much memory when downloading that if your computer
attempts to go to screensaver or to standby mode, they will hang the
system. Try using SmartFTP and see if the system hangs.

Think it might be the memory so tried that memcheck program but dont even
know which file to download. The one I did download was the prebootable iso
image. Am I supposed to put this on a disc? The website doesnt say.

yes, burn a disc

Thought so, so did it anyway, after over 2 hours of testing it was still
going on so stopped it with the following errors:

Like I say this was after 2 hours. The percentage of test completed went up
but when it got to 100% went back to do it all over again is this normal.

I know I should have waited til the end but I wasnt sure if there was gonna
be.

I just need to know is my memory f**ked?

And and also is their a way to find out what ram youve got without
physically looking at it (ie without opening my comp?)

It is norma for it to loop, that is, it does tests, moves to
next test, and repeats whole thing over and over forever,
till you stop it. When you get the problem (attempt to)
resolved, let it loop for several hours, ideally at least a
day. If it has any errors though, you might as well stop
the test and try to resolve it, there's no point in testing
for a day if there were errors already after an hour or
(however long).

If the errors are ALWAYS at exact same address you may have
physical memory problem. Otherwise it would tend to be a
bus spee higher than memory can support in that board with
the specific timings used. The resolution for that is
setting different memory timings or replacing the memory,
your choice. If the memory is spec'd to perform at certain
timings and won't, AND you have the opportunity to return it
for a refund, that might be a good idea. If the refund
isn't an option, only replacement with exact same modules,
it might do no good, you could have same problem with same
make/model/chips/timing replacement modules.
