There are AMD processors with a number associated with them that isn't
speed. For example, 2..1 GHz AMD Athlon has XP 3000+. What does the
3000+ mean?

many thanks

Colin

It means that AMD think the 3000+ is equal to a P4 3000MHz.AMD would say
that the MHz isn't as important as other measures, hence the misleading
naming system. This used to be quite accurate, but with the new 800FSB P4,
it has become disjointed. For example, the P4 800FSB 2.8 is much faster than
the Athlon 2800+.
Hope this helps

I don't think that they've ever claimed to be comparable to the P4 speed.
The numbers are a comparison to older AMD chips - the Thunderbird, or
something like that.

Close, but wrong...

An AMD XP 3000+ runs as fast as an AMD Tbird would run if they made a 3Ghz
version.

Personally, I find it VERY misleading, so I just fall back on Ghz for
comparing AMD to Intel. Still not accurate, but at least it take the
advantage away from the liars.
