in the task manager on average how may processes should be running? i usually
have about 56 to 60 running and its causing windows xp to take about 5
minutes to load. how can i reduce the amount of processes on start up.

That is waaaay too many. There are a number of sites that can guide you to
what you need at startup and what is 'fluff.' Amongst the better ones are:

Do a Google search, i.e.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=xp+start+up+programs , it will
list a number of sites that can guide you through trimming...nay, chopping
your list down to a tolerable level.
Remember, preventing an app from starting with Windows is best done within
the options or settings of the program itself.

Not all processes are in your Startup folder. Go here for a program that
easily allows you to control your startup processes:

You should really be looking at the applications/services that are running
these processes, instead of the processes alone.

remove at startup (it is toward the bottom of the page, but read the entire
