I was wondering if there was a way to tell what progarms
or processes are automatically starting when i start
windows. When I check my task manager it shows i have 25
sometimes 27 running processes uses 113 to 125 mb pf
usage. How can i find out what is running and what is
safe to make stop automatically running
That's a normal number of processes to be running on a basic XP
installation. These are system processes and support various operations.
If you were used to running Win9x, similar system processes for that
operating system were running too. However, other than startup programs,
there wasn't a utility built in to Win9x that would list them them for you.
Managing resources by controlling your startup programs is not a concern.
Although resources are not the worry they used to be, it's wise to at least
be selective about what you allow to load at startup. These items can be
tracked down using Start> Run> MSCONFIG. This brings up the System
Configuration Utility.
The Startup page of this tool shows a list of the programs or portions of
programs that are currently configured to load at startup. Disable
unwanted items by changing the startup settings found in the menus of
the program (or main program that the startup item belongs to). You can
also disable most startup items by removing the check next to them in
MSCONFIG.
