I have a lot of processes running at all times. It is
never lower than 20 and usually up to 27 sometimes more.
One of the accounts is a gaming account and I want as
little as possible loaded into memory etc. Can someone
tell me a link so that I know which of my processes to
shut down?

Thanks,

Jera

Hi

Please perform the following steps to troubleshoot in
Windows XP using Msconfig:

Some programs may not automatically start after Msconfig
has been run. However, most programs can be opened using
a manual method. The issue you are experiencing may be
the result of a program that runs during startup. To
determine which program is causing the issue, please
follow these steps:

1. From the Start menu, click Run. In the Run dialog
box, type: Msconfig, and then click OK.

2. Click the Startup tab, and then click to clear each
check box on the list.

3. Once all the items on the Startup tab have been
unchecked, click OK, and then restart your computer when
you are prompted.

these are great sites, although i know about
the "services". What i'm asking about is processes in the
task manager. I have between 20-30 running and i believe
i don't need them all ex psfree.exe nopdb.exe etc.

Thanks,

Jera

Wes, The information that you provided would have been
usefull if I was talking about services. Howerer I am
talking about processes, you know, go to task manager and
click on the processes tab and you see a list of processes
that are running. I have a lot of those running and I have
a feeling that they dont all need to be running. Please
advise of a site or some other reference material so that
I can find out which of these are safe to shut down and
which I must have running. Here is a list of some of the
ones I have running...
msmsgs.exe, pqv2isvc.exe, nopdb.exe, nvsvc32.exe,
nprotect.exe, vavapsvc.exe, gearsec.exe, taskmgr.exe,
iexplore.exe, ect....

Thanks,

Jera

Yeah, I forgot that one. I play guitar, but I can't finger that chord.
I'm not Chuck Berry. My fingers aren't THAT long. ;o)

Jera;
You betcha! Right now I have 18 processes running. I use all those sites
I gave you to determine what should be running. Some Services have to run.
When I boot, one program (Disk Cleaner) starts, it cleans some stuff and quits.

The Services (Processes) that I have to have.
Name: AudioSrv
Description: Manages audio devices for Windows-based programs.
If this service is stopped, audio devices and effects will not function
properly. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it
will fail to start. ***HAVE TO HAVE, IF YOU WANT SOUND***
Startup Mode: Auto
Run from: C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs
---
Name: AvgServ
Description: *****ANTI VIRUS SOFTWARE******
Startup Mode: Auto
Run from: C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG6\avgserv.exe
---
Name: CryptSvc
Description: Provides three management services: Catalog Database Service,
which confirms the signatures of Windows files; Protected Root Service, which
adds and removes Trusted Root Certification Authority certificates from this
computer; and Key Service, which helps enroll this computer for certificates.
If this service is stopped, these management services will not function properly.
If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.
Startup Mode: Auto ******HAS TO RUN FOR WINDOWS UPDATE******

components to be viewed in Event Viewer. This service cannot be stopped.
Startup Mode: Auto ****I WANT THIS FOR OBVIOUS REASONS*****
Run from: C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe
---
Name: Netman

in which you can view both local area network and remote connections.
Startup Mode: Auto NETWORK CONNECTIONS ****HAVE TO HAVE
TO GET ONLINE***
Run from: C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs

result in system instability.
