I'm getting to know the taskmanager in XP PRO, and am
accustomed to Windows 98. In the old version, I was
accustomed to disabling excesses programs using "the 3
finger salute."

why is my new system running 26+ prcesses? isn't this
unnecessarily slowing down my comp?

does anyone know about XP reactor, and its download site?
I was told by a developer that his program would disable
unused processes...

thanks!

Processes that use 0% CPU time are not "running", and
aren't slowing anything down.

Processes do use some amount of RAM (which is swapped to
the pagefile if not needed), so if you have a low amount
of RAM, you may get a slight slowdown if the machine has
to swap things back and forth.

26 processes is not excessive in the least - you have to
remember that every single thing that loads has at least
one process. Anti-virus programs, firewalls, anything in
your notification area (by the clock), they're all
processes. Windows itself has about 8 processes or so
that are system-critical and must be running. Don't
forget that since you have Task Manager open, that will
show as a process also.

No idea.

Just remember to document what's running and what things
disable so that if you actually are using something that
gets disabled, you can turn it back on...
