Procedure for upg from Win98 to XP Home version

I am not a DBA. I do have an external drive; what is safe to move off the
C drive prior to upgrading to Windows XP, home version? I have MS Office
2000.

What steps do I need to do?

Safest thing to do, provided your external drive is large enough, is
to create a compressed image backup of your entire hard drive prior to
doing to the upgrade.

That way you can go back to your pre-upgrade status by restoring that
image.
