proc/mbo buying advice

I´m planning to buy a new comp and i´m not sure which proccessor to buy. I
dont have much money so i have a doubt between athlon 64 2800+ or some P4 in
that range. What is your advice? How can a64 perform in 32 bit software
enviroment?is it really better?
