how do I remove a read only instuction from a word document as I cannot edit
it nor save to disk also where can I obtain easy to download free antivirus
software as it states critial errors message from Microsoft

Where is the word document presently located? CD, floppy or?

Please post a copy of the so called Critical Errors Message or
paraphrase the message. It may be a hoax.

I will assume the file you are trying to edit is on a CD.
-- Drag file to your hard drive
-- Right click on file, properties, uncheck Read attribute on bottom
-- Hit OK
