Someone gave me this computer and I thought it might cool for my 4
year old grand daughter.
I upgraded the OS to XPpro, but am having probs getting it to see the
Internet.
I have DSL, and typically when I plug in a new computer into the
routeror switch, it works without any hassle.
I tried two different NICs I have, thought to be functional.

Am not getting any 'found new hardware' messages when I start XP,

And am not getting results with coomand line prompts like ipconfig
renew.

Anything obvious that I'm missing here?

Maybe this little box is going to be a big pain

Perform a CLEAN installatrion on it with a legitimate OS.
Once the OS is installed (and patched to at least SP2) - download the latest
drivers for it from Dell's web site and get them to the machine (USB thumb
drive, CD, DVD, whatever.)

(That model may not even support XP - but you can try to use the Windows
2000 drivers or go to the other hardware manufacturer's web pages for
drivers.)

Have you checked Device Manager to insure the Nec is enabled? Perhaps
something in the BIOS is disabled as well. Also check in IE properties,
connection tab, "never dial a connection" is check.

All the best,
SG
