Ron...

I am having a problem - probably from a virus that is now gone but
continue to have problems...

Here it is...

If I try the 3 button ctrl-alt-del the taskmanager comes up but disappears
within a second or so... The same with
regedit and the same with disk defragmenter...

I know in earlier versions - you type setup from the windows directory and
it usually would fix most problems....

It's an IBM laptop... There answer is always the same... Do a restore! But I
have lots and lots of info that I don't want to lose or
messages that I don't want to lose?

Anyone have any ideas... before I do that drastic choir... because you
always forget to backup something and it's GONE!

Thanks All!

Ron...

If you use System Restore, it does not touch anything inside your profile including your My Documents folder. If you find that somethign is missing, you can always undo the restore to return to the previous state.

Hi Ron,

Common and old issue:

This behavior can be caused by a virus. One of three:

W32.Spybot.Worm
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.spybot.worm.html

W32.Klez.Worm
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

W32.Yaha.Worm
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

If the above isn't the case, which it sounds to be:

Enable the Task Manager (Line 51 and 275)

If you're going do a drastic "choir" please make sure you
take pictures and share them with the group.

If he has a virus, System Restore should not be used as it's quite possible
the SR file store is infected as well.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned this. Try the key
combination CTRL+SHIFT+ESC. That seems to be the "in" way
to get task mgr in Win XP.

The "in" way is the method used for NT systems, C-A-D in NT systems often
brings up a menu, depending on whether it's on a corporate network, or
configured for home use. C-A-D was the common method used for (x systems,
which don't have the same full-function Task Manager.

Also, another method is to right-click the Task Bar to invoke it (it will be
one of the menu options).

In any case, none of them will help, as they are all still trying to invoke
the same taskmgr.exe file that the virus is inhibiting.
