Problems with Xp Pro Repair Installation

Hi,

I have a Thinkpad T42 with Xp Pro, with all the latest updates. It crashed
and as I do not have the Recovery CD - in any case, I do not wish to do a
Repair Installation - I am attempting a ' Repair Installation ' with a copy
of Win Xp Home Retail CD.

I have reached a point where I am unable to proceed further, as below:

" The file 'Asms' on Windows XP Professional CD-ROM is needed. Type the path
where the file is located, and then click OK.

Copy files from: GLOBALROOT\DEVICE\CDROM0\I386 "

I have the following advice:

Setup is having problems communicating with your CD-ROM>
To fix the problem:

01. When you receive the error, start a CMD session by pressing SHIFT+F10.

02. Type regedit.exe and press Enter.

03. Select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

04. On the File menu, press Load Hive.

05. Load %Windir%\System32\Config\System.sav.

I am unable to do ' 05 ' .

When I load Hive, it asks for a file name. Where do I enter the command line
" Load %Windir%\System32\Config\System.sav " ???

Accidental contradiction?

Not sure if you have missed something or you just thought Windows XP was
Windows XP was Windows XP... But you cannot use Windows XP Home Edition to
repair a Windows XP Professional installation.

Either get yourself a Windows XP Professional CD or decide that this cannot
be done and get your stuff off the system.

Find a method (BartPE or Ultimate Windows Boot CD or making a complete image
of the hard disk drive or putting the hard disk drive in another machine as
secondary/external device) to get your files off that you do not currently
have a backup of.

Find out the manufacturer of the hard disk drive and download their
diagnostics utility and use it to run a diagnostic on the hard disk drive in
question to verify it is not going bad.

Contact IBM and see how much they will charge you for a set of recovery
CD/DVDs. Get those and recover your system. Restore the data you pulled
off and continue using the computer - making sure to keep consistent and
current backups.

You need to use an XP pro cd

you cannot perform a repair install of XP pro with an XP home cd


Also you will prob have to get an OEM cd too...

*I'm sure someone with "Thinkpad" knowledge should comment on that though*
 
Yes, accidental contradiction. I do not want to do Recovery. I wish to only
REPAIR.

It's possible to create an installation disk from your Recovery CD. A
number of people have had success with this method:

Once you have your XP Pro Installation CD, you may perform a repair
install. But just to be on the safe side, you should still make sure
your data is backed up.

As others have said, it's impossible to perform a repair install with
the disk you currently have (XP Home).

In the event nothing else works, you could always use the XP Home disk
(assuming it isn't currently on another PC) to perform a clean install.
