I just bought a new system for my cousin (no gaming) with AMD Athlon 2500+
Barton on A7V8X-X, 512 DDR. It came running at 1.4..GHz and WinXP Home
(pre-installed) ran fine. I immediately downloaded a bunch of WinXP
updates, added an anti-virus, etc., and authenticated the WinXP Home over
the net. I rebooted a few times and there were no probs. Then I figured
I'd get that GHz raised up there. Using the BIOS, I selected 2200Mhz (it
was one of the pre-configured speeds). When I tried to load WinXp and I got
to a black screen with the cursor (that moved) and it stayed there. So I
tried turning the CPU frequency back to the 1.4..Ghz and booted again. Same
black screen with cursor. I get the same screen if I try to boot into Safe
Mode. What did I do? How do I fix this? Is this the WinXP authentication
bitching at me because it thinks the system has changed? Would a "Repair
installation" of WinXP fix things?

Thanks for your help,
Mitchua

Incorrect BIOS settings for FSB and RAM speeds can cause the CMOS to
lock.
Pull power cord out of the system and find and use the Clear CMOS
jumper and try again.

The CPU core speed should be 1.83 Ghz

HTH :)

I set it to 1.83GHz and I was still getting the black screen. I had to do a
WinXp repair and that seemed to get everything running again.

Thanks for your help.
