Barak Webb

I am having a problem with Windows update.
I am on Windows 2000 SP3.
I do have local admin rights on the computer.
When I go to the Windows update site it shows that I have updates to
install. I select all of them and then click install.. the SEULA comes up
and I click accept. The download/install box comes up but nothing ever
downloads. I have a live internet connection and everything else seems to
work properly. I have turned off virus and firewall as a test and still
nothing.
Also, in control panel looking at the Automatic Update applet it is
completely greyed out.. all I can select is cancel.
I've tried to redownload the Autoupdate applet but cant seem to find it on
the MS site.

If you have any ideas, help would be appreciated :)

Thanks

Barak,

Can you please go to Administrative Tools->Services.
Make sure that the following are enabled:
Automatic Updates
Cryptographic Services

If they are both enabled, can you please post the last 10 to 15 lines of
your 'Windows Update.log' found in C:\winnt.

David,
I do not have Cryptographic Services anywhere in my list.

Try going to command prompt and type in the following, pressing enter
in-between each.

net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc

on the net stop i get an error saying that the service doesnt exist
on the rename i get the system can not find the specified file

Hi

Barak is running Windows 2000, and the cryptsvc service doesn't exist there (the catroot2
folder issue is relevant for WinXP only)

Torgeir,

I have never used Windows 2000 before, thanks for pointing this out.

Barak, can you possibly try the following?

For Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003:
download our controls from
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/cab/x86/unicode/iuctl.cab and save
them to your desktop. Extract the .cab file following the steps below:

1. Go to the desktop and right click the iuctl.cab file.
2. Click "Open".
3. Select all the files listed.
4. Right click on them and click "Extract."
5. Point to a known location (like the desktop) and click "OK."
6. Go to the location you selected and right click the iuctl.inf file.
5. Click "Install."

Also, in services (found in Administrative Tools), is Automatic Updates
started?
