First let me say I'm a casual computer user and don't
speak or understand "computerese" that well, so advice
given needs to be not too technically worded.

I downloaded the new windows messenger. When attempting
to sign onto the internet, I get a message informing me
that there is a newer version and do I want to download
it. If I say yes, it appears to download, sign-in box
appears, stays for about 10 seconds, signs out and gives
me the same message about the newer version. If I say no,
I can't do anything. I looked at the troubleshooter guide
and found the mmssetup.exe file on my hard drive. When I
tried to run it, it gives me a message that there is no
program associated with the file and suggests using the
internet to find the appropriate program. Of course, I
can't get onto the internet (I using my work computer to
send this). I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but
nothing seems to break the vicious never ending loop. What
program do I need to use to run the file or what am I
doing wrong? My computer has Windows XP for home.
thanks for any advice

Greetings Greta,

Firstly, remove your saved Passport login in Windows XP, so it can't automatically sign you
in to the service (you can readd this back in the future if you like), click the Start
Button, then click the Control Panel. Then, click User Accounts in the Control Panel. Select
your account name, and then on the left side of the screen, under Related Tasks, click
'Manage my Network Passwords'. In the window that opens, click the Passport.Net\* (Passport)
entry and click 'Remove'.

Then, do you have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed? Norton added a new "instant messaging
scanning" feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can conflict with Messenger and cause some
of this behavior. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon
in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click
Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

If the window is still open with the upgrade question, say No, it should now stop trying.

Then download the latest Windows Messenger here:

I have Windows XP, i also have Windows Messenger, When i try to delete
this one contact from my list who's always banned, even when i take the
ban off them, it says "(e-mail address removed) can not be deleted. Please
try again later. Then when i click "ok" it kicks me from Windows
Messenger.

Any ideas why?
