I had replied to an e-mail sent to me.

When I tried to send it, it just remains in the outbox.

So, I tried to delete it, but it gives me the "an unknown error has occured"
message.

Now the problem is compounded by the fact it will not let me send any new
e-mails, they just sit there in the outbox.

I can delete the new messages, but the first one that caused the problem
will not delete, and just continues to display the "unknown error" message
when I try.

Is this a Vista problem?

No, it's probably caused by naff antivirus software,
Work around it by clearing the outbox with this utility...
