Problems with what I believe are stray spaces with word

HISTORY: About 18 months ago I was doing some testing on my PC for
chinese language support, which screwed up quite a few things and I
quickly removed. HOWEVER, one of the things that appears to have
stuck, I "assume" from this event, is that when I use the ' or "
characters in Word (or outlook in non-text mode) I get a whopping big
space either before or after the single or double quote mark -
depending on opening/closing

I had thought that re-installing word may have fixed it 12 months ago
--> no joy. I have recently upgraded to Word 2007 (another story!!)
and I still have this strange behaviour!

So, after all this time I'm hopeful that someone can point me in the
right direction to get things "back to normal English" (you may notice
I tend to quote words a bit, so this is obviously VERY ANNOYING!)

Any/all help gratefull accepted

This is not a Word issue. Check the Windows Regional settings and especially
the keyboard layout.

Graham,

Thanks for the suggestion, BUT if keyboard layout was the fault then
would expect things like Notepad & Wordpad to fail as well --> they
don't. Also, when I throw outlook (which uses Word as default editor)
into text mode, would expect same issue to still be evident .... it
isn't.

Keyboard layout is standard US

Any other thoughts welcome

Stefan,

Thanks for the link/resources (need to be updated to include Word
2007) ... this all checks out - only languages enabled are English US
& Australian

Sometimes when you insert characters that are not in the font in use (and
often ones that are), Word jumps into MS Mincho. I've had this happen, too,
most often with documents based on legacy templates, for whatever that is
worth. For example, I use the single and double prime characters (U2032 and
U2033, which *are* present in Times New Roman) for foot and inch marks. Very
often, Word will decide it needs to use MS Mincho for these instead, with
the result that following spaces are gigantic. I haven't entirely solved
this problem, but it occurs less frequently. I'd be willing to bet that MS
Mincho is at the base of your problems as well.

Suzanne,

I think you have pointed me in the right direction at least.

I see this most often in Outlook, which is using MS Sans Serif by
default .... sure enough, if I use " or ' characters, font
automaticall changes to/from Times New Roman & things stuff up!! If I
select everything & change the font to, say, verdana, everything comes
back to right !!

So, all I have to do is figure out how to change my default outlook
template to use Verdana as the default font (which I prefer anyway,
maybe Tahoma) and I think my problem will be "solved", or at least
side-stepped

THANKS SUZANNE - a quick change of tghe default theme & stationary
fonts in outlook & I think my problem is (at long last) solved !

May not be THE real solution, but close enough for a casual looser
like me :-)
